THE BIG DIG 2
The Big Dig 2022 will take place on green space in Paradise, Scarborough Old Town, next to St Mary’s Church (yellow square on aerial photograph).
Scarborough was founded by Henry II in about 1163 and laid out in a grid of streets running down the hill from Castle Road to the harbour. The town was full of houses and gardens, churches, religious houses, markets and shops. Between 1200 and 1350, people were making distinctive pottery (Scarborough Ware) that was sold throughout the country and abroad.
The Big Dig will be looking for the medieval town – the walls and floors of the houses, the rubbish pits, the places where people were making Scarborough Ware.
Come along and have a look at the dig from Friday 27th to Tuesday 31st May.
On Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th there will be archaeological activities for children around St Mary’s Church.
On Saturday 28th at 11am and 1pm and Sunday 29th at 1pm there will be guided tours of the Big Dig site. No booking required for the tours, just come along to St Mary’s Church West Door!
